Land Rights and Women’s Voices

For pastoralist communities, land is much more than a physical asset.

It is closely connected to livelihoods, family wellbeing, community life and identity.

Yet women may face barriers to understanding, claiming and protecting their rights to land and other resources.

Pastoral Women’s Council works to strengthen women’s knowledge of land and legal rights while creating opportunities for women to participate more actively in decision-making.

Knowledge Creates Opportunity

Understanding rights is an important first step.

When women have greater access to information about their rights, they can be better positioned to participate in discussions and decisions affecting their families and communities.

PWC also supports collective action, helping women organize around issues that matter to their communities.

From Individual Voices to Collective Action

One woman’s voice can make a difference. A group of women speaking together can create an even stronger platform for community dialogue.

Collective organization allows women to share experiences, identify common concerns and advocate around issues affecting their lives.

Building More Inclusive Communities

Women’s participation in decisions about land and community resources can help ensure that different perspectives are included.

For PWC, rights and leadership are therefore deeply connected: understanding rights can strengthen participation, while leadership can help women turn knowledge into collective action.
