Why Girls’ Education Can Change a Community

Education can fundamentally influence the opportunities available to a girl throughout her life.

For girls in pastoralist communities, however, remaining in school can involve significant challenges. Poverty, distance, household responsibilities and social expectations can all make continuing education difficult.

Pastoral Women’s Council works with girls, families, schools and communities to help address these barriers.

More Than Enrollment

Getting girls into school is only part of the journey.

Girls also need the support and confidence to remain in school, develop their skills and imagine futures that may have once seemed out of reach.

Education can provide knowledge, confidence and opportunities to explore different paths in life.

A girl who stays in school may gain greater access to information, skills and future economic opportunities. Over time, these opportunities can also benefit her family and wider community.

Creating Pathways for the Next Generation

PWC’s work recognizes that education is connected to other issues facing communities.

Economic opportunity, household circumstances and social expectations can all influence whether girls are able to continue their education.

By working with communities to address these interconnected challenges, PWC seeks to create stronger pathways for girls to learn, grow and participate fully in their futures.
